First Road Ride

Last night I went out on my first real road ride.
Saturday I went on a bike path ride to learn to clip in and out. I felt like I did pretty good on Saturday and was ready to hit the open ROAD last night!!!!

We rode 20 miles in 1hour and 30 minutes. It was an incredible ride. I LOVED being out on the road and seeing how far we had pedaled. I kept watching the stats on my Garmin, I was fascinated by my heart rate, mph and distance. When I finished riding and saw I burnt 1503 calories I was super happy!!! I enjoyed what I was doing and burnt a TON of calories.
I only had one scary time when I was at a stop light and it was on a very slight hill, and a corner..... as soon as the light changed I started off and could NOT for the life of me clip in I lost my balance, caught myself and then my leg was in the way of the tire. Super confusing I know, needless to say I NEVER fell but did get a lovely dark tire mark on my calf :)

I am still trying to figure out my shifting, I swear it's like learning to drive a stick shift car all over again. . . . .
My body feels sore, and my arms are tight. I don't know what I was thinking doing an arm work out before riding.  I am grateful for VERY patient friends who have helped me learn the ropes and slowed down their normal riding speed to ride with me. LOVE you girls.....you know who you are :) I know that my mind is happy and more clear after a super successful first road ride!!!!

Congrats, Lindsey! When you start clipping in, it's always a matter of not IF you will fall, but WHEN you will fall ;-)

Congrats! It's awesome! I don't use clip in pedals, although I do know that you get the most out of your leg motion if you do. They scare me! Keep up the great work!

I love your bike! I want to get into this so bad I just know that it will be a LONG while before I can afford a bike. I think it is awesome though and am loving hearing about it.

So let me get this straight... you essentially ran over you're own self on your bike and still didn't fall? That's some trick!!!

Hey, I'm a mommy cyclist too! Another blogger turned me onto your blog so I thought I'd stop by. I am essentially new at this too. I started cycling indoors with a group back in November but it wasn't on spin bikes, it was on our own bikes on trainers. We rode indoors all winter long and started outdoors in April. I am loving it! I know exactly what you mean by your leg being in the way of the tire, been there, done that! I have met some awesome people by cycling and I love how I can ride for hours and just love every minute of it. This weekend I am doing the MS Ride Cape Cod Getaway. It's 150 miles total and I can't wait. It's going to be so much fun. I'm riding with a group of 28. Sorry for the long post, I normally don't do that but I will definitely keep checking out your blog.

This was a GREAT post! I am so inspired to get out there and try biking and thanks for sharing the part about almost falling, I've been wondering about the clip in shoes, etc. I'm glad your first ride was so fun and successful! I'm going to give it a try someday soon!

I'm so proud of you!! I am jealous I couldn't make it on your ride last night. I wanted to, but Dane had to help move and all so there were the kids to take care of...yada yada. Next time though!!

You don't have to fall now, remember...I took your fall for you. Yea for me!!

Holy cow! You are amazing! I lost about 70 pounds, 7 years ago, but have since put on 10. But I have gotten completely out of the exercise loop.

You are awesome!

Thats a great looking bike!

And what an impressive ride for your first with SPD's. My first few "clipped in" rides were easy and short ones on very quiet roads. It's great that you just bit the bullet and went for it.

Keep up the fantastic work. =D

Girl,
I am totally impressed by you!! I think we would totally be exercise partners if we lived closer!! Though I have tried cycling, it is NOT my thing. Running, on the other hand, is where it's at!! So great that you do both :)

Kyle said...

Yay! Very cool...

I've had SPD clips for years and I still topple over every once in awhile. I just concentrate on planning ahead when I'm coming to a stop.

Don't worry if it happens, though...part of the life of a cyclist!
