Running in the Rain

It was down pouring. I was dressed and ready to go run. I had dropped my preschooler off and was ready to hit the asphalt. I was NOT excited to run in the rain!
For a few reasons. . . the biggest one was I didn't want to ruin my shoes!!!!
Or be dripping wet or cold!

However I got my lame excused thinking out of my head and went for it!
As I was running .5 miles into the run. I stopped stood there and thought this is so LAME!!!
I am going to run back to my car and just go to the gym. I thought longer and harder and decided I was the LAME one!!!! I knew that as soon as I stepped foot on the treadmill, I would be complaining running on it! After my little conversation with myself. I headed off and powered through my run! You know what it was AWESOME!!!

I loved running in the rain :)
Even though I was soggy and wet! I enjoyed it, in fact I look forward to running in the rain again.
Nope my shoes were not ruined at all......my worrying about them was a waste of energy.
 Post run hair!
Totally wet and frizzy mess!

How do you feel about the rain?

UGH. What a wet day! Looks like Oregon. :) I kinda dread running in nasty weather but sometimes when I get out there and it's raining it's not as bad as I thought it would be...

As I posted that week "You're not made of sugar you won't melt" as I had to run in the rain in 40 degree temps. I was complaining too!! The important part is that you stuck to it and did it. Question... How do you find running outside vs. the treadmill. I have NEVER run on the treadmill...

I don't like starting out in the rain; but if I'm already running when it starts then I'm okay. Crazy, right? One thing about running in the rain though...the cars are passing by, some people are thinking you're nuts; but on the inside you know that you are a complete badass! Love it!!!

I had a similar conversation with myself yesterday over going to the gym. Glad you decided to power through it too!

I live in Vancouver - where it rains most of the time , so it doesn't even phase me :)

I just had the same situation on Monday and I ended up enjoying it.

I like it as long as its not just unbearably cold.

Way to go you, getting it done. I always tell myself not to be a wimp and that there are people who wish they were healthy enough to run on the days I don't want to. It usually kicks my butt into gear.

THAT shows dedication! Woohoo!

(Wearing a baseball hat/visor can help a lot...not sure if you were wearing one...and I'm no expert, but I do remember keeping the rain off my face was immensely helpful...just a thought.)

You are amazing!

I love running in the rain also! Especially in summer. This winter, every single long run was on a day when a nor'easter was coming through, so I've certainly gotten used to it.

Besides, what are you going to do if it rains on a race day? Not run?

Thank you for this post. I am struggling today and felt like I may not be able to force myself to run. I decided to check out running blogs for inspiration. I saw your comment on my running blog and decided to check out your blog. Reading this post was just what I needed.

I look forward to reading more. Congrats on the weightloss. That is AWESOME. I have lost around 36 pounds with about 40-50 more to go.

Wow - you're an inspiration! I am doing my first 5k, at first because I opened my big mouth....now I am excited about it.
Great blog!

Great job perservering and getting your run in. If I had the choice, I wouldn't run in the rain. Got caught in it once and ruined my HRM - it needed replacing anyway - but I would much rather run on a nice warm breezy day!

Girl...I don't mind running in a drizzle, but a down pour...NO WAY....not unless it's only a few miles. Hott husband and I had to run 18 miles in the rain while training for last years marathon. Yea...that was INTERESTING :\

Brightcetera said...

You're too cute. :D

I walked on Monday in a drizzle but like Corletta ... a heavy downpour? I'm thinking probably not as a habit but I have done it ... once. On purpose even!

I think these times are so awesome because we show ourselves that we CAN overcome things without wimping out.

Hope your shoes are ok. :D

Haha, I would have been too worried about my shoes! You go, girl!

Wow - first time checking out your blog. Amazing success story girl! You look great :) Frizzy hair and all.

I'm definitely not a rain runner! My first 5K was in the rain and it was NO fun! LOL! I guess it damaged me for life now... :)

LOL Love the post run hair! haha
I think running in the rain sounds like fun! Running in the cold-not so much!

So, a couple things...

Thanks for the comment on my blog (I'm so glad you stumbled across me). You said I'm amazing... thanks! You are beyond awesome! Keep up the great work! I look forward to watching you reach your goal!

As for running in the rain. I'll do it, it's not my favorite thing. I'd rather run in the snow than the rain.

At least you started lol, better than I would do! Only in sun will I sweat : )

I used rain as an excuse for not running outside this past Saturday and a friend of mine politely pointed out that it could be raining on my race day! Props to you for not letting it get in your way! Good to know it doesn't ruin shoes, too! =)

Jen said...

Good for you! Glad you talked yourself into it. I will run in sprinkling rain...with a ball cap, but haven't run in full on Rain!
Happy Day!

Lindsay @ http://pancakesnpajamas.blogspot.com/ said...

I've only done it in light drizzle. I don't think I could do it in a down pour though!

Kinder said...

I like the rain - unless it's a torrential downpour. I would rather exercise in rain than heat.

Good for you for sticking to your run!

Have a great one!

Anne said...

Great job keeping the negative talk in check and getting through your run! Very hardcore.

I'm not crazy about cold rain, but warm spring rain doesn't bother me as much :)

erica said...

Good for you! I have never ran in the rain before. I try to avoid going outside when it rains!

ps you're gorgeous!

xo have a fabulous day

I prefer running in the rain! My very first full marathon ws in a Nor'easter in Rhode Island last October, it was bliss! (Other than the freezing wind!)It is quite exhilerating!

Okay Lindsay, thanks for making me feel extremely guilty! lol Here I was sitting here complaining to my hubby about having to go work-out when it is 86 degrees outside and beautiful here! I know.... shut up and go walk Skye! lol Thanks for the motivation!!! I will think about you in the rain every step I take today! ( :

I commend you for running in the rain. I have run when it's just sprinkling or misty and loved it. But I'm not sure i could do full on rain. Good for you for going for it!!

Your hair still looks pretty good after all that weather!! And...sweat. I'm impressed. I'm also impressed with your motivation, such an inspiration!

I just rad your comment on my blog, and it wasn't Truvia that I was baking with, it was NuNaturals, which is actually Stevia. It was a special "baking blend" so I wouldn't try baking with Truvia if I were you! Who knows though, maybe it would work??

Carly said...

Not a fan of the rain. I just get so lazy when it rains. I'm looking forward to the sun coming out tomorrow so I can get my run in!

jeimayprovy said...

Love your pictures :-) Glad you ended up having a good run!

Lindsay said...

i am pretty good about keeping my shoes clean - running in the rain or not! but i know the feeling. :)

as long as it's not a pouring rain, or thundering, or lightning... i enjoy running in the rain!

Thanks for your congrats! We are very happy to be having a boy.

I personally have always liked to run in the rain. But you just totally make me laugh with all of your pictures. You are so funny. I also got caught up on you.

For some reason, I was thinking zumba would be a faster dance...but I don't think I'd probably do it. I'd probably just go for a run.

Also I'm familiar with rioteous eating. Mine usually happens around 3:00 p.m. every day, not just on Sunday.

Nicole said...

Good for you for pushing through your run! I probably would have just went to the gym. I don't mind it if it's just a drizzle, but anything more is not for me!

Bethany + Ryan said...

i enjoy running in the rain if i am wearing a visor or a hat..i hate squinting. how do you dry your shoes? i put newspaper in mine. it dries them up in hours!! works SO well and doesn't ruin them at all. but what is my FAVORITE thing about running in heavy rain??? i know if i realllly gotta go, i can just pee myself!! lol. if it's raining hard enough! its like peeing in the ocean, no now will ever know unless you tell them

Julie said...

I'm still too much of a chicken to run outside at all! Good for you for sticking it out!

Wow - you are hard core Runner girl!!!!

I actually like running in the rain. It mixes things up a bit and takes my mind off of the task at hand.

Thanks for stopping by my blog. It was great to hear from you. You look great! Keep up the good work!

I don't think i mind running in the rain although I definitely prefer sunshine. I also ran my first 5k this past year in the pouring rain and it was only about 42 degrees. But once I started running, I was so excited that I was doing it, that the rain just didn't t matter

Lindsay, I love your picutres - you crack me up. Way to go for pushing through - you are an inspiration!! Hugs!

Thanks for your comment today! That would be great if you would like to join the 5K... I am glad I found your blog. Truly inspiring! Thanks for sharing your journey!

you make me laugh...thanks I needed one. I have had that same conversation. I actually have enjoyed running in the rain on a few occassions. Fresh rain and nature can make you put things in perspective. As for running in a rain...I think about what would happen if I was running a race and it started to rain....RUN!!!

Hey, thanks for stopping by my blog. You have so many amazing accomplishments! Congrats to an awesome job.

I love running in the rain although I prefer it when it starts raining while I am already out there vs starting my run in a down pour. :)

Looking forward to reading more.

I admire the way you stayed focus from outside, to gym, back to outside. Very good drive! How did you stay so motivated?

I think running in the rain would make me feel like a "hard-core" runner - I can't wait to try it!

Judi said...

Fun photos! I don't like to run in the rain either and for the same reason, I don't want to ruin my running shoes! :) My favorite runs though are on a hot summer day and a light summer rain hits - so refreshing! But starting in the rain, ugh!!!!

A few weeks ago - I was running a MASSIVE hill/bluff and it started to Sleet on my in the middle of May. I so thought about quitting, but pushed through - and then totally felt bad ass, because that's what cool people do - run in the elements! :)

Teale said...

Good for you for toughing out the rain! I don't run, but I actually enjoy walking in a light drizzle. Keeps me nice and cool, even if I do get a bit soggy!

Brindy said...

I DID IT, I ran in the rain!!! :) All because of your post. My husband and I started the Couch to 5K this week. Tonight was our last day of week one and I SOOO did not want to run in the rain (crappy Utah weather!)...curled up on the couch watching a movie sounded so much better. I felt good to overpower those feelings and accomplish my first week of getting in shape. Here's to 8 more weeks of it! :)

As for the post about weighing yourself - I agree and disagree. Right now I do it every morning, I want to actually see my results of staying within my calorie range the previous day (myfitnesspal.com). Everyday it goes down a little bit and it's very motivating. I'm sure once I steady out I'll go back to weighing once a week, but for right now I need the motivation to know all my hard work is paying off and I love seeing results. :)
